Got an email from DNS Belgium asking to verify your .be domain? Ignored it? Domain's now suspended.
What DNS Belgium Verification Is
DNS Belgium (the .be registry) randomly verifies domain ownership to prevent fraud and domain hijacking. They send verification email directly to the registrant email in WHOIS.
You have 14 days to respond. After that: domain suspended until you verify.
ArkHost doesn't control this. We're the registrar. DNS Belgium is the registry. They run .be domains, we just sell them.
When Verification Happens
- Random spot checks (no warning, no pattern)
- Within 14 days after registration
- After WHOIS contact changes
- If domain flagged for suspicious activity
- During registry audits
Frequency increased after GDPR. DNS Belgium can't see WHOIS data anymore, so they verify more often.
What the Email Looks Like
Sender: noreply@dnsbelgium.be
Subject: "Verification of .be domain name yourdomain.be"
Content: Link to verification portal, deadline date, warning about suspension.
Check spam folder. These emails get filtered frequently.
Not sure if legit? Log into dnsbelgium.be directly. Don't click email links if suspicious.
How to Verify
- Click verification link in email (or login at dnsbelgium.be)
- Confirm you own the domain
- Provide requested information:
- Personal ID (for individuals)
- Company registration (for businesses)
- Proof of address (sometimes)
- Submit documents
- Wait for approval (usually 1-3 business days)
Documents must match WHOIS registrant info exactly. Name mismatch = rejection.
Domain Already Suspended
Suspended domains don't resolve. Website down, email down, everything down.
Check suspension reason:
whois yourdomain.be | grep -i "status"
If shows serverHold or pendingVerification: DNS Belgium verification issue.
Fix:
- Log into dnsbelgium.be
- Find pending verification request
- Complete verification process
- Wait 2-4 hours for DNS to update after approval
No way to speed this up. DNS Belgium reviews manually during business hours (Belgian timezone).
Verification Failed
Common rejection reasons:
Name mismatch: WHOIS says "Jan Peeters" but ID says "Jean Peeters"
- Fix: Update WHOIS to match ID exactly, resubmit
Expired documents: ID or business registration expired
- Fix: Submit current valid documents
Company not registered in Belgium: Foreign companies need additional proof
- Fix: Provide company registration from your country + translation if not in Dutch/French/English
Proxy/privacy service: WHOIS shows privacy service, not actual owner
- Fix: Disable WHOIS privacy, update to real info, then verify
Documents unclear: Poor scan quality, information not visible
- Fix: High-res scan or photo, all text readable
Missed the Deadline
14-day deadline passed and domain suspended?
Verification request still valid. Log into dnsbelgium.be and complete it. Domain reactivates after approval.
But if you ignored multiple verification requests over months: DNS Belgium might require extra documentation or phone verification.
Prevention
Keep email current: Update registrant email in WHOIS before it changes. Verification emails go to WHOIS email, not ArkHost account email.
Check spam weekly: Set filter to never spam dnsbelgium.be emails.
Verify WHOIS accuracy: Run whois yourdomain.be and check if info is current.
Respond immediately: Don't wait. Verify same day you get the email.
WHOIS Privacy and Verification
WHOIS privacy complicates .be verification:
- Verification email might go to privacy service instead of you
- Privacy service might not forward it
- DNS Belgium rejects proxy information
For .be domains: either skip WHOIS privacy or monitor very carefully.
Business vs Personal Verification
Personal domains: Photo ID (passport, national ID, driver's license)
Business domains:
- Company registration certificate
- Proof person submitting is authorized (company representative)
- Sometimes: proof of address for business
Belgian companies: KBO/BCE number required. Foreign companies: equivalent registration document from home country.
Multiple Domains
If you own multiple .be domains, DNS Belgium might verify all at once or randomly select a few.
Verify one domain = doesn't exempt others. Each gets verified independently.
How Long Restoration Takes
After successful verification:
- DNS Belgium approval: 1-3 business days
- Domain status update: 2-4 hours
- DNS propagation: up to 24 hours
Total downtime if you verify immediately after suspension: 2-4 days.
If you delay verification by weeks: longer. DNS Belgium processes requests in order received.
Can't Access Verification Portal
Login issues at dnsbelgium.be:
- Use domain name + EPP code (auth code)
- EPP code in ArkHost account: Domains → yourdomain.be → Get EPP Code
- Password reset available at dnsbelgium.be
Still stuck: contact DNS Belgium directly. They have support in Dutch, French, and English.
DNS Belgium Contact
Website: dnsbelgium.be
Support: Available through their website contact form
Phone: Listed on dnsbelgium.be (business hours only, Belgian timezone)
ArkHost can't intervene in verification process. We can provide EPP codes and update WHOIS info, but DNS Belgium handles verification directly.
Verification vs Other Suspensions
Different suspension types:
Verification suspension: serverHold status, fixable by completing verification
Payment suspension: Domain expired, need to renew + pay
Legal hold: Court order or dispute, can't be fixed by verification
ICANN lock: 60-day transfer lock, automatic, not a suspension
Check WHOIS status to identify suspension type.
Still Suspended After Verification?
Completed verification days ago but domain still down?
Check:
- Verification actually approved (login to dnsbelgium.be, check status)
- DNS updated:
dig yourdomain.be +short(should return IP) - Different issue: run
whois yourdomain.befor full status
If verification shows "approved" but domain still suspended: contact DNS Belgium support with approval confirmation.
