A domain alias allows you to access the content of one domain (e.g., old.example.com) through another domain (e.g., new.example.com) and utilize various services. This guide will walk you through the process of creating a domain alias in DirectAdmin.
Prerequisites
- Access to your DirectAdmin account
- The domain names you want to use (source and destination)
- Proper DNS configuration for both domains pointing to your hosting account
Step-by-Step Instructions
-
Log in to DirectAdmin
Open your web browser and navigate to your DirectAdmin login page. Enter your username and password to access your account.
-
Navigate to Domain Pointers
In the Account Manager section, access Domain Pointers in one of two ways:
- Click on the "Domain Pointers" icon, or
- Type "Pointers" in the navigation filter box and select the option when it appears
-
Create a New Domain Pointer
On the top right-hand side of the Domain Pointers page, click the "Create Domain Pointer" button.
-
Configure the Domain Alias
In the creation form:
- Under "Source Domain," enter your new domain name (e.g., new.example.com).
- Ensure the "Create as an Alias" checkbox is ticked.
- If prompted, select the destination domain from a dropdown list.
-
Finalize the Creation
Click on the "Create" button to set up the domain alias.
Important Notes
- Ensure that both domains' DNS settings are correctly configured to point to your hosting account.
- The alias will display the content of the destination domain but maintain the source domain's URL in the browser.
- This method does not create a redirect; it simply displays the content of one domain under a different domain name.
Troubleshooting
- If the domain alias doesn't work immediately, allow up to 24-48 hours for DNS propagation.
- Verify that both domains are using the same nameservers and are pointed to your hosting account.
- Check your DirectAdmin settings to ensure the alias is configured correctly.
